Diagnostic Imaging

As a global pioneer in diagnostic imaging technology, we have built up a solid market-leading position by offering such contrast media as the X-ray contrast agent Iopamiron for X-Ray imaging methods and in particular CT. Bayer has also pioneered the MR-imaging market in Japan with the introduction of Magnevist in 1989. Bayer is still leading this field also with MRI liver contrast agent, EOB-Primovist. Utilizing our R&D network that allows us to conduct simultaneous development across the globe, we constantly endeavour to enhance diagnostic imaging by creating and launching products that are in step with technological advances. One salient example of these efforts is our R&D pipeline of innovative PET tracers for use in molecular imaging technology.

 

General Medicine

The General Medicine business unit boasts a diverse portfolio focusing mainly on cardiovascular risk management (CVRM) products that prevent stroke and myocardial infarction. Our major products include Adalat CR, a long-acting calcium antagonist for the treatment of hypertension and angina; Zetia, a treatment for hyperlipidemia; Bayaspirin, an antiplatelet treatment; and Glucobay, a postprandial hyperglycemia treatment. In March 2009, we successfully launched Fosrenol, a hyperphosphatemia agent. On April 1, 2010, we integrated the Diabetes Care Division, whose major product is the self-monitoring blood glucose meter BREEZE2. In this manner, we will continue to pursue efforts that help improve quality of life (QOL) in response to such lifestyle-related diseases as diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

 

Oncology

Guided by our motto?“Respect the patients’ visions of lives”?we strive to deliver “caring, tender and gentle cancer treatment” that address unresolved medical needs by focusing entirely on patients’ quality of life. Previously released as the world’s first molecular-targeted oral treatment for renal cell carcinoma, Nexavar received approval in Japan for the treatment of unresectable HCC in May 2009. In addition, we co-promote the manufacture and sale of Zevalin, the nation’s first RI-labeled antibody therapy with Fuji Film RI Pharma Co., Ltd. We make our best efforts to promote proper use of our products by having our expert medical representatives provide healthcare professionals with useful information, underpinned by solid evidence, on a timely and accurate basis.

 

Specialty Medicine

Specialty Medicine contributes to future medical advances through the development and marketing of highly specialized therapeutics. In the field of hemophilia, we have developed and market the Kogenate FS BIO-SET kit, which facilitates the administering of Kogenate FS recombinant human factor VIII treatment. In the multiple sclerosis field, we market Betaferon as a relapse and progression prevention treatment. Through these means, we are working to enhance patient treatment as well as quality of life while at the same time forging partnerships built on trust with medical practitioners. In addition, we are committed to supporting patients in their efforts to maintain positive outlooks on life through the provision of wide-ranging services, including educational materials and information websites. Furthermore, in the field of psychiatry, we are marketing Barnetil and Miradol, as well as the sleep inducer, Evamyl.

 

Women’s Healthcare

Capitalizing on our experience as a pioneer in women’s healthcare, we make every effort to serve as a reliable healthcare partner for Japanese women. Beginning with the release in Germany of the world’s first preparation for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in 1928, we have focused on developing oral contraceptives and medicines for menopause and other female health needs throughout the world. We also contribute to the quality of each phase of Japanese women’s lives by offering such oral contraceptive (OC) products as Triquilar and the intrauterine contraceptive system Mirena as well as HRT-related drug formulations including Julina, Wellnara and l’estrogel.

Intendis

Intendis K.K., whose activities were integrated into the operations of Bayer Yakuhin from April 2010, draws on its many years of experience in the dermatology field to provide a host of products including Nerisona, a topical corticosteroid used in skin anti-inflammatory therapy, Neriproct, an anti-haemorrhoidal preparation as well as Adestan Cream and Ramitect tablets, both antimycotic agents. The name “Intendis” is derived from the English word “intend,” which represents our strong will and desire to serve as a “partner to dermatologists” in their quest to support people’s health. Our medical representatives, expert in the field of dermatology, provide a variety of up-to-date information on dermatological therapy. Through these means as well as efforts to augment our product lineup, we intend to provide patients with wide ranging therapeutic options.

Consumer Care

Synonymous with the Bayer brand name, Aspirin has spread swiftly to every corner of the globe since its discovery by the German chemist Felix Hoffmann. Today, this representative analgesic antipyretic is recognized as a worldwide family favorite. Its presence extends as far as the literary field and is mentioned in numerous novels and short stories. Celebrating its 110th anniversary in 2009, Bayer continues to market Aspirin’s wide-ranging appeal in partnership with Sato Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. In addition, the “ASPIRIN Lady.com” website is designed to provide working women with helpful information based on the concept of “healing headaches from the inside and outside.”

Animal Health

Based on more than 80 years of experience in the business of animal health, Bayer’s Animal Health Division currently operates in approximately 120 countries around the world. Under the slogan “Protect Animals, Benefit People,” we are endeavoring to improve the quality of life and well-being of animals and people by offering a range of innovative veterinary products for both companion animals and livestock. Our range of products includes the Advantage series of antiparasitic products for dogs and cats; Baytril, the world’s first broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone developed especially for animals; Profender Spot, a broad-spectrum gastrointestinal worm treatment for cats; and our lineup of other parasiticides and nutraceuticals and anticoccidial drug Baycox for piglets and calves. Our products and programs help to enhance animal health by supporting the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of animal diseases.
